“Need Money for Porsche” feels like the kind of internet phrase that should have one obvious beginning. A viral post. A celebrity photo. A designer. A TikTok video. An original T-shirt.

The public evidence is messier.

We can find dated pages, artwork, event photography and social discussions that show the phrase becoming visible over time. What we cannot currently do is point to one primary source and say with confidence:

That distinction matters. The earliest page we can find today is not automatically the same thing as the first use in history.

Old posts disappear. Product listings get replaced. Social accounts are deleted. Marketplace pages are re-created. Forum posts can be edited years later.

“Need money for Porsche” is also a natural sentence. It does not require a complicated joke structure or a unique catchphrase. A car fan could type it as a caption, a designer could print it on a shirt, and someone else could make a sticker using the same words without seeing either version.

One of the oldest currently discoverable pages is a BMWPassion forum thread titled “Live Life In The Fast Lane With Need Money For Porsche Shirt.” The thread page says it was started on August 4, 2020.

That sounds like a clean answer until you look more closely.

The same page also states that it was last modified on September 16, 2024. Parts of the current text discuss events that happened after 2020. That means the page is useful as a dated lead, but it is not conclusive proof that every sentence currently visible was present in 2020.

The wording has almost everything a graphic T-shirt slogan needs. It is short, readable, funny, aspirational and connected to a brand that already has a strong enthusiast culture.

Most importantly, the wearer does not need to own a Porsche for the design to make sense.

The same visual idea can extend into other automotive brands too. On Need Money 4 Porsche, enthusiasts can move from Porsche-inspired humor into collections such as Ferrari hoodies and the Bugatti white sweatshirt collection.

At the moment, there is no single person we can responsibly name as the confirmed inventor.

That does not mean nobody created an early version. It means the surviving public evidence is not strong enough to prove who came first.

There is no solid evidence showing that TikTok was the original birthplace of the phrase.

TikTok and short-form video are a natural environment for the slogan because it works visually and can be understood in seconds. That can make the phrase feel like a TikTok-native trend even if it existed elsewhere earlier.

There may have been early shirt designs, but the public record does not currently establish one universally recognized garment as the original source for every later version.

The most defensible answer is that the phrase developed through the overlap of dream-car humor, internet culture and graphic apparel, rather than through one clearly documented viral launch.

A forum page gives us an early dated lead in 2020, although later editing means it should be treated cautiously. By 2023, the phrase is documented in contemporary art and photographed at a major Porsche event. By 2024, it is being discussed as a recognizable T-shirt and meme-like expression inside car communities.
